Dr. Collins Kokuro

Dr Collins Kokuro is a Senior Specialist Physician at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Department of Internal Medicine. He is a Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and also the Deputy Training Coordinator in Internal Medicine for the West African College of Physician- Ghana Chapter. He is involved in the teaching of resident medical officers, medical students and other health workers.

Dr Kokuro provides services in General Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He is an expert in both routine and mbulatory Electrocardiograhy and Echocardiography and has advance training in abdominal ultrasonography.
He earned his BSc Human Biology and MB.ChB in Medicine from the School of Medical Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi Ghana in the year 2000 AND 2004 respectively. He became a member of the West African College of Physicians in 2009 and completed the fellowship program of the college in Internal Medicine in 2013. He then did a fellowship observation in Cardiology at the University of Utah, School of Medicine, Division of cardiology. He holds a postgraduate diploma in Project Design and Management (DPDM) from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

Dr Kokuro was a co-investigator and associate director of the Ashanti ProCol project to improve cardiovascular health among health workers in Ghana. His main area of interest is in cardiovascular disease, cardiac arrhythmias and hypertension. He is a member of the Essential Vascular Care Guidelines Study Group.

Dr Kokuro has been a facilitator in many local and international conferences/meetings with exciting presentations in the area of cardiovascular diseases and hypertension. He is affiliated to the European Society of Cardiology, World Heart Federation, West African College of Physicians, International Federation of Health Promotion and Education, Ghana Medical Association and the Methodist Medical Association of Ghana. Dr Kokuro has provided a number of consultancy services, as an expert in hypertension and cardiometabolic diseases, to a number of pharmaceutical giants in Ghana and West Africa and has also served on a number of Advisory Boards.

He is involved in community and volunteering work with special interest in community education of hypertension, obesity and cardiovascular diseases in general.

Dr Kokuro is married with three children.

Dr Francis Agyekum is a lecturer with the University of Ghana Medical School, College of Health Sciences, Legon. He is also a Consultant Cardiologist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Dr. Agyekum graduated from University of Ghana Medical School in 2004 and continued to do his post-graduate studies, after two years’ service in the district with the Ghana Health Service.

He became a member of the Ghana College of Physicians in 2010 in Internal Medicine. He was awarded Fellowship in Internal Medicine and Cardiology by the West African College of Physicians in 2016. Dr. Agyekum also had one year post-graduate certificate in Interventional Cardiology from the Guangdong Cardiovascular Institute, China in 2015. He has also obtained certificates in leadership training in health from Washington University in 2020, and Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in 2020. He is currently pursuing 1 year post-graduate Diploma in Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine with the University of South Wales, United Kingdom.
Dr. Agyekum has practiced at all levels of health care in Ghana in various capacities as Medical Officer, Physician Specialist, and Senior Specialist and Cardiologist. He has been part of a number of research publications. His main interest areas are Preventive cardiology, heart failure, non-invasive cardiovascular testing, and coronary interventions.

Dr. Agyekum is the General Secretary of the Ghanaian Society of Cardiology and a member of the International Society of Hypertension, and the European Society of Cardiology. He is married with three Children.

He is a practicing Senior Specialist Physician, a cardiologist and a researcher with interest in global cardiovascular health including prevention, epidemiology, clinical trials, implementation science, improving health systems and training. He works across the spectrum of cardiovascular diseases in research on CVD risk factors, Stroke ,Heart failure, HIV-related cardiac co-morbidities.

He also works as a senior lecturer at the School of Medicine and Dentistry of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST-SMD), Department of Medicine. He completed his Fogarty Global Health Fellowship with the University of North Carolina, working on emerging CVD risk among both HIV and non-HIV patients in Ghana.

He is a Fellow of both the West African College of Physicians and the Ghana College of Physicians, also a Fellow of the International Society of Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention(ISCEP) and a member of the International Society of Global Health (ISoGH).He has a Post graduate certificate in Clinical research from the Harvard Medical School.

For over twenty years, Dr. Doku has been in the forefront of the fight against cardiovascular diseases.

He partnered with senior colleagues to form the Ghanaian Society of Hypertension and Cardiology (GHASHCAR) in 2003 which he became the maiden Secretary General. Through this society, he organized nationwide campaign to fight cardiovascular diseases through World Heart Day celebrations, International Update Courses in Cardiology, cardiology seminars and symposia to create awareness in among both the general public and the staff of the health systems to fight CVD by mobilizing the media, cooperate Ghana with their CSR, pharmaceutical companies, the MOH/GHS, WHO, the National Cardiothoracic Centre, Ghanaian Medical Students Association, etc Dr. Doku partnered with local and international stakeholders to create the Ghana Heart Initiative since September 2018 with the main aim of strengthening the health system to manage CVD.

Through the initiative, National Guideline for the Management of CVD, training manual and facilitators guide for CVD, Akomacare APP for ease of use of CVD guidelines, training of health professionals in BLS/ACLS and CVD as well as equipment support that will improve CVD care in over 190 health facilities and involving close to 2000 health worker.

He is joining forces with partners to provide more support for GHI beyond 2021 to increase training and equipment support as well as to expand to involve other countries in Africa and Asia. As a lecturer, he enjoys teaching, mentoring and enlightening young doctors to become cardiologists/internists.

He has been in involved in several other projects and publications. Dr. Doku had his medical training in KNUST, Fellowship training in Cardiology in Ghana and Germany.

Professor Isaac Kofi Owusu is an Associate Professor and Head of Department of Medicine at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. He is also an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital (KATH), Kumasi. He graduated from the KNUST, Kumasi with BSc in Human Biology and MB, ChB degrees in 1990 and 1993 respectively.

He holds a postgraduate diploma in Project Design and Management from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK. He trained in Internal Medicine and became a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (WACP) in 2005. He then had a 2-year Fellowship Training in Cardiology at the Cardiovascular Centre, Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Hospital in Aalst, Belgium. He was elected a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physician and Surgeons in 2011. Professor Owusu’s areas of interest are heart failure, arrhythmias, echocardiography, cardiac haemodynamics, venous thromboembolism, hypertension and other cardiovascular risk factors.

He has been a principal or co-principal investigator of many research projects, and has supervised research projects of Fellowship candidates of WACP, PhD and Masters students. He has authored several scientific publications in many international journals. Professor Owusu has been a facilitator in many local and international conferences. He is currently the Immediate Past President of the Ghanaian Society of Cardiology, a member of the Pan-African Society of Cardiology, and a member of European Society of Hypertension and European Society of Cardiology.

Professor Owusu is actively involved in Medical Education at all levels of training. He has served as an Examination Officer for the undergraduate programme, and a Postgraduate Training Coordinator in the Department of Medicine, KATH, Kumasi. He has been an External Examiner for the University of Ghana Medical School in Accra and the School of Medical Sciences, University of Cape Coast. He is also an Examiner for the West African College of Physicians.and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Cyril Ofori

Dr. Ofori completed his medical school at the University of Ghana Medical school. He subsequently went on to an internship at Harlem Hospital Center, a Columbia University affiliate and his residency at Sinai Hospital, a Johns Hopkins university Center affiliate.

He then went on for his cardiology fellowship at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital. He subsequently took a position at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He has since gone into private practice and is currently the Chair of Cardiology and the Cardiovascular Institute at Wooster Hospital Health systems and the Chief Medical Officer for Bloomington Medical Services, a 50 physician multispecialty group.

He spends a fair amount of time volunteering with Africa Partners Medical in Ghana, has participated in numerous medical missions to Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital, lectured at Korle Bu teaching hospital as well as is involved in teaching in the young physicians conference yearly. He also sees patients at Akai House clinic and Euracare.
